Our Power Plan

Our Power Plan

At SaskPower, our overall objective is to create and maintain a sustainable energy supply — one that balances economic, environmental and social requirements. Comprehensive and ongoing system planning is a critical foundation for not only the ongoing success of our company, but also the future prosperity of Saskatchewan.

There are two primary factors that are creating a requirement for new electricity supply sources.

They are:

The current projected supply gap means SaskPower will have to rebuild, replace or acquire approximately 4,100 megawatts (MW) by 2030. As a result, meeting customer needs will require significant new generation and transmission infrastructure.

Our planning is broken into three periods:

Planning considerations
In looking to the future, planning will have to take into consideration a variety of unavoidable hard constraints. All future supply options will have to meet stringent federal environmental regulations associated with air emissions, water and biodiversity that are historically unprecedented. Addressing these regulatory requirements will come at an unavoidable cost and will mean that our reliance on conventional coal-fired generation may no longer be an option.

Secured short-term needs
We have effectively secured our province’s short-term needs for the next five years. We look forward to discussing a future electricity and conservation strategy for the medium and long terms, and welcome the valuable input our customers, industry and all stakeholders can provide.
