SaskPower announces successful applicants for third and final intake of Power Generation Partner Program

January 29, 2021

SaskPower has approved the third-year selection of customer projects that will generate and sell power to the company as part of the Power Generation Partner Program (PGPP).

A total of 12 projects have been accepted. Ten projects will add 10 MW of renewable solar power to the grid, with two more adding 2.5 MW of carbon-neutral, non-renewable flare gas power.

“During the past three years the PGPP has provided economic opportunity to both the solar and oil and gas customers while supporting SaskPower’s efforts to meet our goal to lower our emissions by 40 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030,” said SaskPower President & CEO Mike Marsh. “The program is now coming to a close, and we will use what we learned from the PGPP as we evaluate options for future customer generation programs.”

In 2018, SaskPower announced the PGPP as a two-year program with the option of extending it to three. The PGPP provides customers with the opportunity to generate power using a qualified technology and sell it to SaskPower at an agreed-upon rate for a set period of time. The maximum allowable project sizes for renewable projects is 1 MW, and 5 MW for carbon neutral non-renewable technologies.

Priority was given first to projects in areas with planned capacity, next to those who had the lowest energy price bid and then to other areas throughout the province. Only projects meeting the Program’s eligibility criteria were considered for acceptance.
