Aspen Power Station Generates $558 Million In Local Spend As Project Nears Halfway Point

November 06, 2025

Construction of the Aspen Power Station near Lanigan has generated hundreds of millions of dollars for local businesses. Including design and procurement, the project, which began construction in the spring of 2024, is now nearing the halfway point.

$558 million has been committed to 189 Saskatchewan businesses through the Aspen Power Station project, including $263.5 million to 21 Indigenous-owned businesses and $29.5 million to nine women-owned businesses.

“The Aspen project is well underway, and we have already exceeded the procurement targets that were set,” said Sean Wilson, Legislative Secretary for the Minister Responsible for SaskPower. “This was made possible because all the construction contracts went to Canadian companies and 18 of 19 contracts went to Saskatchewan companies. Every effort has been made to ensure local opportunity and local investment.”

An average of 550 workers are currently on site each day, with a peak of more than 700 workers expected on site in spring 2026. To date, 1.34 million person-hours have been spent on the job.

“Aspen Power Station will be a crucial part of SaskPower’s grid for decades to come,” said Rupen Pandya, SaskPower President and CEO. “When the plant comes online, it will provide the reliable, affordable power our customers, communities and business need to grow and thrive.”

As a 370-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle turbine natural gas facility, Aspen will be similar to SaskPower’s Chinook and Great Plains power stations, with the added feature that it can also operate in simple-cycle mode. This will provide added flexibility to ramp up quickly to meet sudden spikes in electricity demand.
