windmill in a field

We know many companies have experience building and operating generating facilities. Working with independent power producers (IPPs) helps us add more power for our communities and businesses while also supporting growth and economic development around the province.

But adding new power to our grid is complex and takes careful planning. We encourage all potential IPP partners to fully assess projects to ensure they can be successful.

What We Look For

Here are some things we look for when considering projects to work with:

Technical & Experience

Experience - What experience does the IPP have with similar projects?

Project Timeline - What is the project timeline from start to finish?

Financial & Risk

Financial Assessment - Is the project cost-competitive with other power projects available to SaskPower? Has the IPP provided a full financial assessment of the project?

Risks - Are there any hidden costs or potential liabilities?

Community & Environmental Considerations

Community Benefits - How will the project benefit the local community?

Environment Impacts - What are the potential environmental impacts? How will they be addressed?

Project Readiness

Key Agreements - Does the IPP have all their required agreements (i.e. permits, fuel supply) in place?

IPP Commitments

To enter into an agreement with us, IPPs are expected to demonstrate strong planning and engagement practices.

As an IPP, you’ll be responsible for:

  • securing land for the project
  • creating a communication and engagement plan
  • engaging with Rightsholders, rural municipalities and local communities
  • identifying and working with impacted stakeholders
  • supporting Indigenous businesses participation and partnerships where applicable
