Solar Installations

We’ve selected Southern Springs Solar Limited Partnership (LP) as the Independent Power Producer (IPP) to build and operate a new 100-megawatt (MW) solar facility near Coronach.

Southern Springs Solar LP, a partnership between Potentia Renewables Inc. and their Indigenous partner, M-Squared Renewables LP, will develop, own, and operate the facility. M-Squared Renewables is itself a partnership between Meadow Lake Tribal Council (MLTC) and Mistawasis Nêhiyawak First Nation.

The facility will be built near Poplar River Power Station, approximately 8 kilometres south of Coronach, within the Rural Municipality of Hart Butte.

Why Solar?

We’re investing in the province’s power system to ensure reliable and affordable power for our customers, while also supporting our growing province. Wind and solar facilities are cost-effective additions to our power supply mix and don’t emit greenhouse gases while generating power.

Our Progress So Far

We’ve signed a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Southern Springs Solar LP to purchase the power produced at the facility.

The IPP will be responsible to engage with Rightsholders, municipal authorities and other key stakeholders. They’ve also committed to follow all our requirements and local, provincial, and federal laws as they plan, develop, finance, construct, own, operate, maintain, and decommission the facility, and remediate the site after its operation ends.

We anticipate the facility to be in operation by late 2027.

Respecting the Local Environment

The IPP will be responsible to engage with the Ministry of Environment and other regulatory agencies to ensure all environmental requirements are being met.

Project Benefits

For all current and future wind and solar competitions, we’ve included a requirement that proposals must have at least 10% Indigenous ownership.

In this case, M-Squared Renewables will own 51% of the Southern Springs Solar project. This is the largest Indigenous ownership to date for a solar project of this size in the province. It reinforces our commitment to economic reconciliation and providing more opportunity for Indigenous communities to participate in power production.
