Minister Responsible for SaskPower Don Morgan joined with municipal and Indigenous leaders and SaskPower officials near Moose Jaw today to observe the ongoing construction of the Great Plains Power Station.

For this project, SaskPower has committed to exceeding the strong local investment seen during construction of the Chinook Power Station near Swift Current. During the Chinook construction, there was more than $140 million of local participation and more than $10 million of Indigenous participation.

“The construction of Great Plains Power Station is already helping to power our province’s economic recovery by providing opportunities for Saskatchewan companies and creating up to 500 jobs,” Morgan said. “In the longer term, Great Plains will require 25 full-time jobs, and we anticipate the benefits of the project to have a lasting impact on the Moose Jaw area.”

SaskPower selected Burns & McDonnell as the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction contractor for the project. The first major construction contracts have been awarded to Allan Ventures and Allan Construction of Saskatoon and PCL Industrial Management of Regina. Construction of the new power station began in Moose Jaw’s Agri-Food Industrial Park in March 2021 and is expected to be complete in 2024.

When operational, Great Plains Power Station will add 360 megawatts of natural gas power generation to the provincial grid – enough to service a city the size of Saskatoon.

“Great Plains Power Station is an important part of SaskPower’s plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while continuing to provide reliable, cost-effective power to our customers,” said Mike Marsh, SaskPower President and CEO. “This state-of-the-art, combined-cycle natural gas-fired facility will produce lower emitting, baseload power that will be available 24/7 and enable us to incorporate more intermittent renewable sources such as wind and solar.”
