SaskPower Applies for First Rate Increase in Four Years

February 18, 2022

SaskPower has applied to the Saskatchewan Rate Review Panel (SRRP) for rate increases of 4 per cent in 2022, and another 4 per cent in 2023. SaskPower has not increased its rates since 2018.

If approved, the proposed rate increases would result in an average increase of approximately $5 on residential customers’ bills starting on September 1, 2022, and a further $5 on April 1, 2023.

The decision to pursue a rate application took into consideration the need to maintain a reliable, sustainable electricity system while also minimizing the impact of rate increases on households, farms and businesses.

“SaskPower is committed to providing stable and reliable power to our customers at an affordable rate, and we’ve worked hard to avoid rate increases in recent years,” said Troy King, Interim President & CEO. “Today, SaskPower requires additional funding to increase renewable generation, modernize the power system and ensure a sustainable future for us all.”

SaskPower is also requesting approval to make a change to its rate design methodology. The change is revenue neutral to SaskPower and will only affect customers who pay separate demand and energy charges. Residential customers and the majority of farm and small commercial customers will be unaffected.
