Storm Causes Power Outages in Southwest Saskatchewan
April 05, 2022
Update as of 12 p.m. on April 10, 2022
We continue to make significant progress restoring power to the Maple Creek region despite the extremely wet conditions and difficult terrain.
The main line into Cypress Hills, the town of Hatton and the rural areas north and west of Hatton were restored yesterday by 8 p.m.
Our crews continue working to restore power to the remaining 138 customers without power as quickly and as safely as possible. We’re on track to restore many of these remaining customers by 10 p.m. tonight.
Some customers may be restored outside of these restoration times. If you’re one of them and have a health or safety concern related to the length of the outage, please reach out to your local community administration.
As crews work to restore power near highways and roads, we ask drivers to slow down to 60 km when passing us or any other worker.
We continue to thank you for your patience while our crews work diligently to clean up after this incredibly destructive storm.

Update as of 5:00 p.m. on April 8, 2022
We continue to have 19 crews (+100 staff) working to restore power as quickly and as safely as possible. A total of 320 new power poles have been dispatched to the region. Of those poles, 200 have been installed so far, resulting in roughly 20 kilometers of power line being rehung.
Currently, 970 customers are without power. Golden Prairie and the surrounding rural area were restored at 4:00 p.m. today and the rural areas around Piapot are expected to be restored by 10:00 p.m. tonight. The majority of the remaining customers affected by this storm are expected to be back on by 10:00 p.m. tomorrow night.
We continue to thank you for your patience while our crews work diligently to clean up after this incredibly destructive storm.

Update as of 1:30 p.m. on April 7, 2022
Power restoration efforts continue in Southwest Saskatchewan, with 19 crews (+100 staff) hard at work assessing damage, installing poles, fixing crossarms and clearing vegetation. Currently, 1,880 customers remain without power – 357 in the town of Maple Creek, 738 in the area to the north and east including Hatton, Golden Prairie and Piapot, and 785 to the south including Cypress Hills and Nekaneet. We were able to restore power to most customers in Maple Creek last night, and expect to restore power to the remainder today, along with some customers to the north. Currently, we anticipate the remainder of main line to the north will be restored by 10 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, April 8), and the main line south will be restored by 10 p.m. Saturday.
Damage in these areas is extensive, and some customers whose properties are fed by secondary lines will remain without power beyond these timelines. We’re still assessing the full extent of the damage, with a helicopter patrol currently underway.
We again thank you for your patience as we work through these challenging circumstances. We’re making every effort to restore power to every customer as soon as possible without risking safety.

Update as of 4:30 p.m. on April 6, 2022
Repair work is underway, and we’re continuing to reallocate resources to support the restoration effort in the Maple Creek area. However, we continue to identify new issues, and the wet, muddy conditions are causing difficult working conditions.
We still anticipate power will be restored to the town of Maple Creek tonight. However, the ETR has been moved to 10 p.m.
Power has been restored to Tompkins and surrounding rurals.
Repairs to the lines feeding areas north and east of Maple Creek will not be completed tonight. This means Hatton, Golden Prairie and Piapot will remain without power well into tomorrow.
Crews have not been able to begin repair work south of Maple Creek. This means Cypress Hills, Nekaneet and surrounding rurals will be off into Friday.
In total, we expect approximately 2,000 customers in these areas to remain without power overnight, and 700 to 800 to remain without power into Friday.
Once again, we would like to thank customers for their patience as we continue to work. Every effort is being made to restore power to our customers as quickly as possible without risking safety.

April 5, 2022
Strong wind gusts and heavy, wet precipitation brought on by a spring storm caused power outages to southwest Saskatchewan and continue to affect communities in the region.
The high winds have caused significant damage to our infrastructure, particularly in the Maple Creek area. This includes up to 200-300 damaged power poles, and miles of downed power lines.
Since the beginning of the storm, the Outage Centre has fielded about 2,600 calls. As of 6:30 pm, approximately 3,700 customers were still without power.
While our crews are working hard to make repairs and restore power as quickly and safely as possible, the extent of the damage and the poor road and weather conditions over the past 24 hours mean that some customers will remain without power overnight.
The communities and surrounding areas which will be without power for all, or a portion, of the night include:
- Maple Creek and surrounding rural areas
- Frontier and surrounding rural areas
While crews are continuing to restore power to affected communities, please note that planned outages may be needed in the next few days in order to complete additional repairs.
We’ll continue to share new information as quickly as we can and have power restored to impacted communities as soon as possible. For any new outages, or communities without an estimated time of repair (ETR) yet, we’ll post updates to saskpower.com/outagemap and our Twitter feed when an ETR is determined.
If you come across a low hanging or downed power line please remember to keep a safe distance of at least 10 metres away. If you see a downed line, call us at 310-2220 or report an outage online at saskpower.com/reportoutage.
If you experience a new outage or notice that your area hasn’t been reported, please report the outage online at saskpower.com/reportoutage or call us at 310-2220.
