SaskPower to Extend Price Paid for Surplus Electricity through Net Metering Program for Four Years

December 02, 2021

Following public consultation, surveys, and multiple engagement sessions, SaskPower is extending the current price of 7.5 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) paid for electricity through the Net Metering program for an additional four years.

During this time, SaskPower will engage further with customers to learn more about what is important to them as the utility develops comprehensive plans for the future. SaskPower’s goal is to develop plans for new and emerging small-scale technologies that will provide customers with more options when it comes to purchasing, generating, storing, and managing electricity.

“SaskPower is committed to supporting customers who wish to generate their own power through renewable means while making sure it’s sustainable for all customers,” said Shawn Schmidt, Vice President of Distribution and Customer Services. “As we gathered feedback this year, customers told us they wanted want to do more with emerging technologies than what the current program covers. This extension will give us time to continue to engage and properly explore and develop programming alternatives to better meet the needs of SaskPower and our customers.”

SaskPower received over 800 responses to a province-wide survey that was conducted on behalf of the utility about the Net Metering program. The results of the survey showed that Saskatchewan customers are interested in generating their own power, and that customers would like to see innovation and openness as SaskPower plans for the future.

SaskPower’s Net Metering program gives customers the opportunity to generate their own power through renewable technologies and sell power they don’t use back to SaskPower at a rate of 7.5 cents per kWh.
